Nurse Prescribing for Pain

Fri 2 March 2018 to Fri 2 March 2018, De Vere West One Conference Centre, London

Chaired by Sue Jenkins Treasurer The British Pain Society & Senior Lecturer, Centre of Medical Education Cardiff University this important national conference provides an essential update for current and aspiring nurse prescribers on prescribing for pain. Pain is a growing area of nurse prescribing and one of the most common areas, in a survey of the Association for Prescribers members 50% of members prescribed for pain (Karen Stenner, University of Surrey). This makes it essential that nurse prescribers maintain the competence and skills to prescribe for pain in an effective way, working with patients to improve pain outcomes.

The conference will also discuss the role of the Prescribing Competency Framework in supporting non medical pain prescribing standard as proposed by the NMC:

“We propose to adopt the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s Single competency framework for all prescribers as our new standards of proficiency for nurse and midwife prescribing practice….we anticipate formally adopting the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s Single competency framework for all prescribers as our practice standards from spring 2018. Education providers may adopt these standards of proficiency as ‘early adopters’ from September 2018, and all programmes would be expected to adopt these standards of proficiency by September 2019.” NMC June 2017

Through national updates and extended interactive practical case studies delegates will hear how to develop and maintain prescribing competence, and how to develop effectiveness in post qualification practice. Extended sessions developing prescribing competence and confidence, medication management, managing medication safety and preventing medication errors and overcoming the barriers to effective pain management.
